The 36th edition of BUFF Malmö Film Festival will open the March 23. The week includes 121 films from 40 different countries and the opening film from Japan recently got an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature. 

Known from The Boy and the Beast, the director Mamoru Hosoda’s new film will be the opening film of BUFF 2019. Mirai, distributed by Njuta Films in Sweden, stands with an Oscar nomination in the category Best Animated Feature together with Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs and Brad Birds The Incredibles 2.

Not many animes get nominated and Mirai is now the sixth on that list. The film will be the main act of the opening ceremony that will also include activities inspired by Japan.

The film is planned to have Swedish premiere July 26.
