The painfully lonely Bea finds herself facing a whole summer in the small town where her parents are going to give their marriage a second chance, at the same time as they decide what to do with the family-owned diner. Then Bea meets Kate, whose life is the polar opposite of her own. While Bea is an only child, Kate lives in a large family of squabbling elder siblings and a single mum with a constant hangover. Bea and Kate become friends and spend the summer together. Their friendship is immediate and intense, and makes the pair both curious and courageous.
